Clean up your desktop
using Windows toolbars

Too many icons on your desktop?

Can't see your pretty wallpaper anymore?

Does your desktop look cluttered like this?

Here's a trick I use so I have no icons on the desktop.

Most people know about the quick launch bar but even using that, it fills up pretty quick leaving little or no room for your running programs on the taskbar.

You can place all of your icons in toolbars.

To create toolbars to hold all of your desktop icons:

  1. Create a folder (toolbars) in C:\Documents and Settings\username to contain your toolbars. NOTE: Suggested path not required
  2. Right click on an unused area of the taskbar
  3. On the popup menu, move the mouse cursor to "Toolbars", then select "New Toolbar..."
  4. In the "New Toolbar" dialog, navigate to your toolbars directory created in step 1.
  5. Click on the Toolbar folder to highlight it
  6. Click the "Make New Folder" button
  7. Enter a name for your new toolbar and press Enter. Your new toolbar will appear next to the system tray
  8. Drag the new toolbar to the side (top, bottom, left, or right) of the screen where you want it.
  9. Right click on your new toolbar to set view options (I like to remove text and title display and on the view menu, set to small icons).
  10. Repeat steps 3-9 for each menu you wish to create. NOTE: Menus may overlap, more than one per side may be desired
  11. To place items from your desktop to your new menus, simply drag and drop shortcuts from desktop to a menubar.
  12. Once items are placed onto toolbars, you can then delete them from your desktop achieving a clean desktop that looks like this:
